Tadej Pogacar pulled off another superb stage victory and in the process he helped fellow Slovenian Primoz Roglic to extend his lead at the top of the general classification. Fabio Aru retired from the race today due to a muscle injury.

Sepp Kuss grabbed his first ever Grand Tour stage win, he was in the day's breakaway and somehow he held off the advance of the main bunch to get the glory at the line. In the general classification, Alejandro Valverde attacked on the final climb and Primoz Roglic was able to respond, the two arrived together and gained time on Quintana, Lopez and Pogacar.

Jakob Fuglsang rescued his disappointing second part of the season with a stage win on Monday, while Roglic defended himself perfectly once again and even gained some more time on Valverde.

Today's stage was blown apart by crosswinds, a group of 50 riders were alert and determined enough to take advantage and from that group Philippe Gilbert was the fastest at the finish. There were serious consequences in the general classification as well, race leader Primoz Roglic lost over 5 minutes to the front group and Nairo Quintana bounced up to second place. Wilco Kelderman and James Knox also moved up a few spots in the general classification.

Sergio Higuita grabbed the stage victory that he wanted on his first ever Grand Tour participation, he was in the breakaway all day and managed to hold out against a select chasing group. Roglic and Valverde gained a minute on Quintana and Pogacar, while Lopez also gained a place in the general classification.

Remi Cavagna pulled off the upset today, he was in the breakaway and in the end managed to hold a five-second advantage over the bunch to claim the stage win. No changes in the general classification, race leader Roglic even managed to grab a top-ten finish in this flat stage.

Fabio Jakobsen beat Sam Bennett in the final sprint in Madrid, grabbing the fifth stage win for Deceuninck-Quick Step in this year's Vuelta. Primoz Roglic has retained his spot at the top of the general classification ahead of 39-year-old Alejandro Valverde and fellow Slovenian Tadej Pogacar.
