Back Cycling: Team Ineos sign Richard Carapaz

Giro d'Italia winner Richard Carapaz will ride for a new team in 2020, British outfit Team Ineos have signed him on a three-year deal. The move adds quality to an already incredible squad, which features Grand Tour winners Chris Froome, Geraint Thomas and Egan Bernal. The 26-year-old Ecuadorian rider has been riding for Movistar since 2016 and has won his first Grand Tour in June, when he defeated Vincenzo Nibali and Primoz Roglic at the Giro d'Italia.

"I believe I will fit into this group well and race to my full potential over the coming years. I want to achieve some great triumphs for Team Ineos," said Carapaz. "I am very excited about joining the team. I feel this is a great opportunity for me to continue my development and growth as a rider, working with a team that continues to go from strength-to-strength, year after year. I already know a lot of the riders on the team and I am really looking forward to working everyone at Team Ineos from next season." Carapaz is the first rider from his country to win a Grand Tour, but he was unable to take part in the Tour of Spain because of a crash in a race in the Netherlands this summer.

Carapaz is the first new signing that Team Ineos have made for the 2020 season, joining a strong South-American contingent that already includes top riders like Egan Bernal, Ivan Sosa and Sebastian Henao. The British team will let some riders go at the end of the year, Wout Poels, David de la Cruz, and Kenny Elissonde are among those who will seek new contracts elsewhere.

"We have been long time admirers of his talents as a bike rider and have followed his development closely over a number of years, as we have always marked him out as a potential member of our team," team principal Dave Brailsford said about Richard Carapaz. "He is obviously a fantastic climber but also has great versatility as he showed at the Giro earlier this year. He is still relatively young and I have no doubt he can develop and improve even further at Team Ineos."

Egan Bernal is 9/4 at William Hill to win the Tour de France again next season, while Richard Carapaz is 22/1 to win it.
