Back Manny Machado: $300 Million for 10 years

On February 19, 2019, Manny Machado agreed to a record $300 million deal to play for the San Diego Padres for the next 10 years. This is the largest MLB contract behind Giancarlo Stanton's agreement of $325 million for 13 years with the Marlins in the 2014-2015 offseason. Machado's deal will include an opt-out after the fifth year, and it has a limited no-trade clause incorporated.

Career Highlights

The 26-year-old Manny Machado has had an amazing start to his young career. The third baseman and shortstop is a 4-time All-Star (2013, 2015, 2016, 2018). He has won 2 Gold Glove Awards (2013, 2015). In 2013 he won the AL Platinum Glove too. Manny's career batting average is .282 over his first 7 seasons mostly with the Baltimore Orioles. He has hit 175 home runs, and the righty has racked up 513 RBI's. It is not just his offensive power numbers that he is so well known for. Machado consistently makes unbelievable plays in the infield at either third base or shortstop showing off both great range and a powerful arm.

Postseason Stats

Manny Machado has made 3 postseason runs throughout his career. Twice with the Baltimore Orioles in 2012 and 2016, and last season with the Los Angeles Dodgers. During the 6 playoff series he has endured he has batted .213 with an on-base percentage of .268. He has 4 home runs, 3 doubles, and 14 RBI's off 19 hits. These 23 games will serve as valuable experience for him in October baseball as the Padres are looking to build a playoff team in San Diego.

Teammates

Just last year in the offseason the Padres signed the first baseman Eric Hosmer to an 8-year deal worth $144 million. At that time, it was the largest contract in Padres' history. Hosmer brought his raw power and athleticism to San Diego as he is an All-Star (2016), Silver Slugger Award winner (2017), 4-time Gold Glove Award winner (2013, 2014, 2015, 2017), and a World Series Champion (2015) with the Kansas City Royals. He also played in another fall classic with the Royals so its safe to say that he has plenty of playoff baseball experience which his current team lacks. San Diego is making a serious effort to change that culture by picking up these big-name players like Machado and Hosmer.

Another Padres' All-Star player is...

...Wil Myers. He was the AL Rookie of the Year in 2013. Myers was an All-Star in 2016, and he hit for an extremely rare cycle on April 10, 2017. This outfielder is known for power, speed, and well-rounded baseball skill.

San Diego is said to have the best minor league farm system in the MLB. Minor League players like Fernando Tatis Jr., MacKenzie Gore, Francisco Mejia, Luis Urias, and Chris Paddack all strive to join their team in the majors. By developing these young talented prospects, the Padres hope to go from being pretenders to contenders very soon.

Reputation

Although Manny Machado is a fantastic baseball player, he has been known to have some poor characteristics. His lack of hustle has come into question on multiple occasions including the World Series last season when he wasn't running out plays on the bases. He has also gained a reputation for being a dirty player. In the 2018 NLCS against the Milwaukee Brewers Machado spiked first baseman, Jesus Aguilar, as they crossed paths near the base. He has also slid into second attempting to take out middle infielders. Hopefully, for $300 million, he is recognized for his outstanding play and not the negative behaviors that he has exemplified in the past.

NL West

I look for San Diego to improve overall, but I am not sure they have a good enough team to compete with and beat out the other ball clubs in their division. The Los Angeles Dodgers, Colorado Rockies, San Francisco Giants, and Arizona Diamondbacks may all still have a better chance at winning the NL West even after the addition of Manny Machado. It most likely will be a few more years until the Padres improve enough to win the division and make the postseason.
