Back Thursday Night Football: The Philadelphia Eagles vs. The Green Bay Packers (September 26, 2019)

On Thursday, September 26th, 2019 the Green Bay Packers hosted the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday Night Football from Lambeau Field in a great NFC matchup. The Packers were off to a perfect undefeated 2019-2020 NFL season through the first three weeks while the Eagles struggled to win only one of their first three games this year. This was shaping up to be an early must win statement game for the Eagles as they came into this season with high expectations.

In the first quarter, there was only one scoring drive as the Packers topped off a 5 play 89-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown run by Aaron Jones. The second quarter was filled with excitement as both teams traded scoring strikes beginning with the Packers’, Mason Crosby, hitting a 30-yard field goal giving Green Bay a 10-0 early lead.

Then, the Eagles retaliated with a 6-yard touchdown pass from Carson Wentz to Alshon Jeffery. The Packers kicked another field goal just over 30 yards. Philly answered with another touchdown pass from Wentz to Dallas Goedert followed up by a rushing touchdown from Jordan Howard. The Green Bay Packers finished the second quarter scoring barrage with a 19 yard touchdown pass from Rodgers to Geronimo Allison. The halftime score was GB 20 – PHI 21.

During the third quarter, Wentz found Howard for a Philadelphia TD, and the Packers’, Jimmy Graham, caught a touchdown pass from Rodgers. The score was now tied at 27 points. The Eagles scored again on another rushing touchdown from Howard which was his third touchdown of the entertaining game.

Rodgers was driving and had a chance to tie the game late when his pass was intercepted to seal the 34-27 victory for the Philadelphia Eagles. The pick came from an unlikely source as the undrafted cornerback, Craig James, was just added from the practice squad to the active roster only 2 days prior to this game. In my opinion this was the best game of the first few weeks of the 2019-2020 NFL season.

Injuries:

Eagles - Cornerback Sidney Jones endured a hamstring injury and was unable to return to the game. Philadelphia is left with just 2 healthy cornerbacks remaining on their active roster (Rasul Douglas and Craig James).

Packers – Running back Jamaal Williams was carted off the field after the first play from scrimmage on Thursday night. He obviously was unable to return to the game. Cornerback Tony Brown endured a hamstring injury and also was unable to return to game action last Thursday.

Right tackle Bryan Bulaga left the field due to a shoulder injury and was unable to return to the game as well. Safety Will Redmond was being evaluated due to the NFL’s concussion protocol.

Cornerback Kevin King endured a groin injury, and wide receiver Davante Adams endured a toe injury (turf toe) keeping him off the field for the Green Bay Packers last drive of the game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Week 5 Games:

  • New York Jets at Philadelphia Eagles – Sunday, October 6, 2019
  • Green Bay Packers at Dallas Cowboys – Sunday, October 6, 2019

 Media Statements:

"I'm a no-name out there, so when somebody that doesn't get a lot of playing time gets in the game, that's the target," says James. "That's the game plan. Coaches tell you, `Go at him. That's the weak link.' But as the weak link, I still have to be as prepared as the starters."

"We already were confident," Howard stated. "We already believed in ourselves. It probably reassured everybody else."

"Obviously, having him out there would have been for the better, but we had a lot of chances down the stretch," Rodgers explained. "We moved the ball well all day long. We just struggled in the red zone."

"Credit the defense, man, it was twice down there," says Doug Pederson. "... Any time you can keep an Aaron Rodgers team out of the end zone, it's a positive thing."
