After being knocked out from the Champions League by AS Monaco Arsene Wenger says the away goals rule should count after extra time rather than full-time. Arsenal were defeated 3-1 at home in the first leg and won the second leg 2-0 but Monaco qualified on the away goals rule.
"The rule was created in the 1960s and the weight of the away goal is too great today," said Wenger. The rule that the Arsenal boss suggests is already in place in the League Cup semi finals, where away goals count only after extra time. Moreover, the away goals rule does not count at all in the Football League play-offs.
Chelsea were also knocked out of the Champions League on away goals by Paris Saint-Germain. "Two English teams have gone out on away goals and that should be questioned. The rule was created in the 1960s to favour attacking teams but football has changed," Wenger added. The Arsenal boss also said that Monaco did not deserve to qualify.
Arsenal are currently 1/10 at Bet365 to finish inside the Premier League top four this season.

Now he is talking about this rule, but one thing is for sure. Arsenal should won that game against Monaco, and that was huge defeat in London. In Monaco they play much better, they were better side, but it wasn't enough. They must focus themselves now on Premier league, where they should fight for Champions league spot...

Yes this is stupid rule but you can't complain on rules when you are out of competition. You should looking for reason in your team, see what went wrong and not looking for excuses in rules. I am surprised for hearing this from Arsene Wenger I think that he must admit that Monaco deserve to go to the next round and that...

I bet that if Arsenal were qualified for the next round we've never heard anything from the Venger's mouth. And don't sounds logical at all this rule to count in extra time but not in regular. The rule itself is stupid and I've always say that. There's a two ways to be lifted completely or to stand. Everything other will...

I have to disagree with Wenger. My opinion about this is actually 100% different. I think that away goal shouldn't count in extra time. In regular 90 mins it's complety fine. Extra time is real issue. Take last nights game between Ajax and Dnipro. When away team scores goal in extra time, you have 15-20 minutes to score...

Extra time is real issue. Take last nights game between Ajax and Dnipro. When away team scores goal in extra time, you have 15-20 minutes to score two goals, which is unfair by huge margin. Anyway, Arsene Wenger is ready for retirement. He seems to be looking for excuses, and not blaming his team or himself for bad preformances for last 5-6 years, or even more. Yes, they are in good shape at the moment, but lack of any trophy is really hurting this huge fan-base english gigant.

I think that the rule is good and fair, but on the other side it's a bit strange because this rule apply in Extra Time too, like timidi said. It's harder to score or to win when you are playing in front of your opposite fans, it's so different playing home and away, so I think that this quote from Arsene Wenger is because...

It's harder to score or to win when you are playing in front of your opposite fans, it's so different playing home and away, so I think that this quote from Arsene Wenger is because if there was no such rule they will play extra time and penalties with Monaco. In my country is quote for Wenger's reaction, it says: "Who's loosing, has right to argue". :D

I think that rule for away goal only in extra time doesn't make any sense. I love this rule just how it is. I played football professional and I think that team who score away should have advantage because it is not same playing at home and away. Monaco played well and deserve this win and next round and this talk about...
