It is fun to bet on racing once you understand the basic rules. The most important rule is to only bet with money you can afford and the second most important rule is to always go to the trouble of understanding the various types of wagers offered to you.
 

When you bet on racing you can usually choose between these types of wagers:

• Bet on racing – the win bet: This is a simple bet where you place your money on the horse you think you will win. Winners get to collect their earnings from the betting window.
• Bet on racing – the place bet: This is a bet where you choose a horse to come second and where you win money if this particular horse comes first or second.
• Bet on racing – the show bet: This is a bet where you choose a horse to come third and where you win money if this particular horse comes first, second, or third.
• Bet on racing – the win-place bet: This is a bet where you choose a horse that can come either first or second, and where you win money if this is the case.
• Bet on racing – the across the board bet: This is a bet where you choose one horse that can either win, place or show. You will earn winnings if this horse comes either first, second, or third.

When you bet on racing there are also more exotic types of wagers on offer:

The exacta horse racing bet: This is a bet where you choose two horses, one to come first and one to come second. Some people call this type of a bet an exactas bet. A two dollar Exacta 3-5 bet will mean that horse number 3 must come first and horse number 5 must come second. This type of bet is a favorite of skilled bettors and can often lead to lucrative payouts.

The quinella horse racing bet: This is a bet where you choose two horses to come either first or second, but the order is not important. This type of bet pays less than exacta horse bets as it’s easier to win at. A two dollar Quinella 4-5 bet means that you will win if horse number 4 and 5 comes first and second.

The trifecta horse racing bet: This is a bet where you choose three horses to finish 1st, 2nd and 3rd in specific order. Some people call trifecta bets triactor bets. A two dollar Trifecta 4-5-6 bet will only pay off if horse number four comes first, horse number five comes second, and horse number six comes third.

The superfecta horse racing bet: This is a bet where you choose four horses and you select in which order you think they will finish. A straight two dollar superfecta 4-6-5-2 bet will only pay out if the horses finish in the exact order: 4-6-5-2. This bet is popular and can have lucrative payouts.
