Celtic were looking forward to a third consecutive Champions League campaign but their dreams were shattered as they succumbed to a 2-0 defeat by Legia Warsaw at Murrayfield. Legia had won the first leg 4-1 so Celtic needed a strong performance to overturn that deficit. Michal Zyro and Michal Kucharczyk scored to give the visitors a clear victory, both in the second leg and on aggregate.
Celtic could make the Europa League but no Champions League football means a massive financial blow, which might lead to the club being forced to sell the likes of Fraser Forster and Virgil van Dijk.
Kucharczyk slid a pass through the Celtic defence and Zyro pushed the ball past Forster in the first half. After the interval Legia continued to be in control and Kucharczyk rounded the keeper before scoring the second goal. Anthony Stokes and James Forrest tested Legia goalkeeper Dusan Kuciak in the second half but that was not nearly enough to change the fate of the game.
Real Madrid are the favourites to win this season's Champions League at Bet365, they are 4/1 to retain the trophy.
