AC Milan banned from UEFA Europa League

Italian Serie A side AC Milan were banned from next season's UEFA Europa League due to their continued breaches of Financial Fair Play rules. This was in fact an agreement that the club reached with UEFA, they admitted their wrongdoings in exchange for a one-year ban and promised to balance their books during this year. AC Milan finished fifth in Serie A last season, a placement which qualified them for next season's UEFA Europa League.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport announced the decision, also saying that this concludes UEFA's proceedings against the Italian club. The ban pushes AS Roma, who finished sixth in Serie A, to the UEFA Europa League group stage, while seventh-placed Torino will have the chance to play in the qualifying rounds. AC Milan have won the UEFA Champions League seven times, the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup on two occasions and the UEFA Super Cup five times. AC Milan have been found guilty of breaking spending rules between 2015 and 2017, they were handed a two-year ban but appealed against that decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

AC Milan confirmed that they accepted the ban and said they hope it could be the stimulus that they need in order to bounce back towards the top of European football. "Whilst saddened by the fact that our fans will not be able to see their team compete in European competition next season, the club recognises and respects FFP," a statement from AC Milan read. "The club acknowledges it has no other choice but to accept the sanctions, as it seeks to forge a pathway back to full compliance. AC Milan remains committed to restoring the club to its rightful place at the top of European football."

Manchester United are currently the favourites to win next season's UEFA Europa League, they are 6/1 at Bet365 to grab the trophy.
