Chelsea win the Champions League after penalty shoot-out thriller

Roberto Di Matteo's men beat the odds and grabbed the Champions League trophy right in Bayern Munich's den, the stunning Allianz Arena. Didier Drogba undoubtedly was the night's hero as he leveled the score with just two minutes of normal time left, by powering in one of his trademark headers. Bayern had taken the lead on 82 minutes through Thomas Muller. Then the African striker turned villain a few minutes into extra-time as he tripped Franck Ribery inside the box. The referee pointed to the spot but Arjen Robben had a weak shot and Petr Cech saved the penalty kick. The drama advanced to the penalty shoot-out, not a new thing for Chelsea who lost their only previous final on penalties, in 2008, against Manchester United. Juan Mata missed one for the Blues but Ivica Olic and Bastian Schweinsteiger faild to find the back of the net for Bayern and it all came down to Didier Drogba to bag the decisive spot kick. And he didn't miss the target. This was Roberto Di Matteo's last game as interim Chelsea manager but now, after such an achievement, he might well be offered a permanent deal. However, Di Matteo did not want to give a clear comment on the issue: "My future is not important. Whatever the club decides I will respect. You know that what we discuss with the boss [Abramovich] we don't discuss publicly. It is irrelevant because, as I have said in the last three months, I have been happy with the arrangement and whatever the future holds I will accept." Di Matteo also declined to reveal what Abramovich told him before the trophy presentation, saying: "I don't discuss these things but he looked very happy and all the supporters, players and staff are happy because this is an historic night for our club. Football is crazy and unpredictable and I don't think anybody could have predicted what has happened in the last three months. I feel great and I'm pleased for everyone connected with the club”. Didier Drogba, who scored the equaliser before hitting the winning penalty in the shoot-out, praised his team-mates. "I believe a lot in destiny. I pray a lot. It was written a long time ago. God is wonderful. This team is amazing. I want to dedicate this Cup to all our managers and players before”.
