Cycling: 2019 Giro d'Italia preview
The first Grand Tour of the season kicks off on Saturday in Bologna, the 102nd edition of the Giro d'Italia promises to be one of the most unpredictable in recent years. The route is 3,578.8 km long, there will be three individual time-trial stages, but also plenty of days of climbing in the mountains and also some hilly finishes for the punchers. Two former winners will fight for the trophy once again: Bahrain-Merida's Vincenzo Nibali and Sunweb's Tom Dumoulin. Chris Froome, last year's winner, has decided to skip the race this time in order to prepare better for the Tour de France. Let's have a look at the top three favourites for the overall win:

1. Tom Dumoulin

The Dutchman finished second behind Froome last year and it seems he is the natural favourite for this year's race, especially since there will be three individual time-trial stages. Dumoulin initially wanted to focus on the Tour de France this year after having finished second there as well last season, but the route of this year's Giro seems to favour his skills so he decided to go for another victory in Italy. "I definitely don't think that I can take a lot of time in the time trials," Dumoulin said, trying to play down the expectations. "They suit me well, and I like them, but in terms of gaining time, I probably won't take that much."

2. Simon Yates

The 26-year-old British rider surely remembers last year's Giro, he seemed all set to win the race as he was leading the overall standings before the 19th stage but he crumbled on that day and arrived more than 40 minutes after winner Chris Froome. That day surely was painful for Yates, but he did very well to recover and win the Vuelta a Espana a few months later. He surely has the motivation to fight for the win after what happened last year and he seems to have improved his time-trial skills lately.

3. Primoz Roglic

The 29-year-old former ski jumper seems ready for the biggest step in his cycling career: winning a Grand Tour. This season he has been totally dominant in the smaller stage races, the UAE Tour, Tirreno-Adriatico and the Tour de Romandie, and he seems set to go for a bigger target. Last year he finished fourth overall at the Tour de France, he surely is good enough for at least a podium finish at the Giro. There are plenty other riders that could upset the odds, starting with former winner Vincenzo Nibali, who could go for this victory for the last time given that he is 34 years old. Mikel Landa from team Movistar will be a tough customer in the mountains, while Astana's young Colombian climber Miguel Angel Lopez could also give the big favourites some headaches. Primoz Roglic is 7/4 at Bet365 to win this year's Giro d'Italia, Tom Dumoulin is 5/2 to win the race and Simon Yates is 11/4 to win the trophy.
