Dallas Mavericks Owners Speaks Out on US DFS, eSports and VR Markets
Mark Cuban, investor and owner NBA team the Dallas Mavericks, gave his opinions of the DFS, eSports and virtual reality markets in the US this week in an exclusive interview with Fortune and he sees a bright future. In fact, he has already invested with virtual reality firm Virtuix Omni, mixed reality company Magic Leap, and eSports company Unikrn. Cuban sees a future in VR; however he says that the 360-degree livestream video has a ways to go in terms of NBA competitions and the live front row experience you can get from attending a live game. Fortune asked, “We've seen Turner and the NBA partner with NextVR and the Kings invest in Voke VR this season, with 360-degree video livestreaming. What impact do you feel 360-degree video will have on the NBA moving forward?” to which Cuban answered, “In the next couple years, none. The cameras are nowhere close to ready. They really fall down when it comes to distance and resolution relative to the amount of bandwidth available. “You can have some fun with it, but it's not close to providing the front-row experience people talk about.” With regard to the DFS impact on the NBA, Cuban said, “It has made watching our games on TV more fun. Hopefully, the stupidity and hypocrisy in a few states will be cleared up in the courts shortly.” The interview is worth a read and is available here.
