Reigning Ligue 1 champions AS Monaco and French Cup winners Paris Saint-Germain kick off the new football season with the Super Cup match on Saturday at Stade Louis II. The Trophee des Champions (Super Cup) has been founded in 1995 in the current format and Paris Saint-Germain have won it six times, including the last four editions. AS Monaco have won the trophy twice, in 1997 and 2000. Paris Saint-Germain have thrashed AS Monaco when they last met in the French Cup semi-finals last season, PSG won 4-1 away and 5-0 at home.
AS Monaco have sold quite a few of their best players this summer as Tiemoue Bakayoko, Bernardo Silva and Benjamin Mendy all left the club for considerable amounts of money. They have brought in young Belgian midfielder Youri Tielemans from Anderlecht, and he should slot right into Bakayoko's place. Star striker Kylian Mbappe has been the target of numerous transfer rumours this summer but so far AS Monaco have managed to keep him at the club. Joao Moutinho will probably be left out of this match after having played at the Confederations Cup.
Paris Saint-Germain have not made major changes to their squad this summer, they have signed right-back Daniel Alves on a free transfer from Juventus and spent 16 million euros on Real Sociedad left-back Yuri Berchiche. Left-back Layvin Kurzawa has recovered after surgery and will probably be in the first eleven, but midfielder Marco Verratti has not played in any of the pre-season friendlies due to a knee problem. Julian Draxler might also miss out after being given an extended holiday due to his participation at the Confederations Cup.
Probable line-ups:
Monaco: Subasic - Sidibe, Glik, Jemerson, Jorge - Lopes, Fabinho, Tielemans, Lemar - Mbappe, Falcao
PSG: Trapp - Alves, Marquinhos, Silva, Kurzawa - Rabiot, Motta, Matuidi - Di Maria, Cavani, Pastore
My prediction: 1-1 draw after 90 minutes.
