England interim manager Gareth Southgate prepares for what could be either his final game in charge or the start of a new era for the Three Lions as they host former world and European champions Spain on Tuesday. Spain have won four of the last five matches against England. The sole victory for the English during that streak was in 2011, thanks to a goal from Frank Lampard.
This will be the fourth and maybe final match in charge for Gareth Southgate, who was appointed for four games after former boss Sam Allardyce lost his job. The first three matches, all World Cup qualifiers, produced two wins and a draw, and maybe another good result could mean Southgate will remain on a permanent basis. Last week's 3-- home victory over rivals Scotland pleased the fans and it surely increased Southgate's chances of staying on. Ryan Bertrand and Wayne Rooney might miss out due to slight injuries, while Harry Kane was sent back to his club to continue his recovery from injury.
After a rather poor showing at Euro 2016, Spain went on a five-match unbeaten streak, winning four games and drawing one. Last week they sailed past Macedonia 4-0, with goals from Vitolo, Monreal and Aduriz. Diego Costa missed that match and he won't play on Tuesday either as he was sent back to Chelsea in order to recover from an injury.
