Kansas City Man Guilty of Running Illegal Sports Betting Operation
This week Kansas City resident, 49-year-old Hoang Pham, pled guilty to charges of illegal online sports betting and money laundering in front of US District Judge Fernando Gaitan. Pham admittedly managed the operation from 2008, possibly earlier, until it was busted by the feds in 2012. According to prosecutors, Pham ran the business using websites based in Costa Rica has brought in an average of $2,000 per day in gross revenue. The investigation revealed that in just one year, January 1, 2011, to February 9, 2012, $3,788,635 in wagers were made. A series of bank accounts were used to and in a separate civil hearing, Pham turned over $56,437 to the government in illegal proceeds. Once the United States Probation Office completes its pre-sentence investigation, Pham will be sentenced.
