Iconic midfielder Andres Iniesta has played his last match for Barcelona on Sunday, the Blaugrana defeated Real Sociedad 1-0 in the last match of the season and celebrated another LaLiga title. The 34-year-old midfielder has decided to leave Barcelona at the end of the season after having won no less than 22 major trophies during the 16 years that he has spent with the senior side. Philippe Coutinho scored the only goal of the match to secure all three points for Barcelona against Sociedad, but for the fans it was all about saying farewell to Iniesta.
The Spain midfielder was replaced in the 82nd minute of the match in order to receive a well-deserved standing ovation from the crowd. Iniesta embraced all his team-mates before leaving the pitch with tears in his eyes. After the match the club prepared a light show during which the Barcelona players emerged on the pitch wearing Iniesta shirts to form a guard of honour. Then it was Iniesta himself who had the honour of lifting the La Liga then the Copa del Rey trophies, which Barcelona have won this season.
"This is a difficult day but I have spent 22 marvellous years here," Iniesta said, addressing the crowd at Camp Nou. "It's been a pride and a pleasure to defend and represent this badge, which for me is the best in the world. Thanks to all my team-mates, each and every one. I will miss you all so much. And thank you to the fans, for all your love, everything you've made me feel since I arrived here as a boy. I leave as a man. I will keep you in my heart forever." Iniesta had joined the Barcelona youth academy at the age of 12 and went on to make 674 senior appearances for the club. He has not yet revealed where he will play next season.
