Atletico Madrid and Barcelona are in the middle of an open conflict these days, and the prize they are fighting for is French striker Antoine Griezmann. Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu said on Monday that he met with Griezmann's agent earlier this season. Atletico Madrid chief executive Miguel Angel Gil Marin replied promptly: "We're fed up with Barcelona's attitude." Moreover, the Atletico executive also pointed out that making such comments just a few days ahead of Atletico's Europa League final against Marseille shows an "absolute lack of respect".
The conflict is not new, Atletico reported Barcelona to Fifa over an alleged illegal approach for the 27-year-old France forward in December. Barcelona have already secured the LaLiga title and Atletico Madrid are almost certain of finishing in second place. Miguel Angel Gil Marin said that Barcelona put pressure on Griezmann throughout the season and that their attitude was not fair, considering that both teams were competing for the league title. Barcelona are now three games away from going the entire league season undefeated.
In January Barcelona denied having reached an agreement to sign Griezmann, the Frenchman is under contract with Atletico until 2022. "Atletico Madrid's stance is very clear and has been made public on numerous occasions - not once have we negotiated for Griezmann nor do we have any intention to do so," said Marin. The Atletico Madrid chief executive added that he had warned Barcelona that Atletico would demand compensation for their "inappropriate behaviour" if Griezmann would try to cancel his contract as a consequence of Barca's pressure.
Antoine Griezmann is 1/5 at SkyBet to join Barcelona during next summer's transfer window and he is 7/2 to remain at Atletico Madrid.
