LaLiga leaders Barcelona have announced the completion of a surprising signing: striker Kevin-Prince Boateng joins the Blaugrana on loan from Serie A side Sassuolo until the end of the season. Barcelona also have the option to buy Boateng at the end of the season for seven million pounds, while the loan fee for the remainder of the season is around 2 million euros. The 31-year-old Ghanian international had joined Sassuolo from Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt this summer and went on to score 5 goals in 15 appearances in all competitions for the Italian club. Last summer Barcelona sold defender Marlon to Sassuolo for 6 million euros, but with a buy-back clause for the Blaugrana.
Barcelona described their new signing in a statement on the official club website: "Kevin-Prince Boateng is a player who will surely adapt quickly to the team. With experience of playing in four of the biggest leagues in Europe, the Premier League, the Bundesliga, Serie A and La Liga, he is a man who has scored goals wherever he has been. Furthermore, Boateng is a player who versatile to a fault. During his time with Las Palmas with Quique Setien as coach he played as an out and out striker, a typical number 9. However, he is also able to play further back as he did at AC Milan, scoring twice against Barca in his time with the Rossoneri. His ability to bring people into the game means he is excellent at playing behind the main striker."
Kevin Prince-Boateng has already played in LaLiga for Las Palmas in the 2016-2017 season, scoring 10 goals in 28 appearances. He was born in Germany but chose to represent Ghana at an international level, earning 15 caps. His international career ended at the 2014 World Cup, when he was sent home by the Ghana FA after verbally abusing his manager. In 2017 he said in an interview that he prefers Real Madrid to Barcelona and even said that he could have been a Blancos players if he had been more serious earlier in his career. Now he played down those remarks: Don’t ask me about Real Madrid... is just the past! I only want to focus on Barcelona and I hope to score at Bernabeu for the next Clasico." He is the second transfer of the January window for Barcelona after the arrival of Valencia defender Jeison Murillo.
Barcelona are currently leading the table in LaLiga and they are 1/9 at Bet365 to win the title this season. -
