Championship side Bristol City are looking to produce another upset in the League Cup as they face Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday in the first leg of their semi-final tie. The two teams have last met in 2007, also in the League Cup, and Manchester City won that match 2-1. However, Bristol City have the upper hand in the overall head-to-head record, they have beaten the Citizens ten times in 23 meetings. The last victory for Bristol City over Manchester City was in a Division One match in 1979.
Manchester City have survived the busy festive period with just two points dropped as they were held to a goalless draw by Crystal Palace on New Year's Eve, apart from that it was all wins for Pep Guardiola and his men. Last weekend they grabbed a comfortable 4-1 victory over Burnley in the FA Cup, now they can gain a solid advantage ahead of the second leg of the League Cup semi-final. Benjamin Mendy, Vincent Kompany and Gabriel Jesus are still injured while David Silva flew back to Spain to take care of his wife and son after the Burnley match so he might not be available on Tuesday.
Bristol City are living a dream in the League Cup, they have knocked out four Premier League teams en route to the semi-finals: Watford, Stoke, Crystal Palace and last but not least, Manchester United. Their 2-1 victory over the Red Devils in December will probably be remembered for years to come, but they have recorded just one victory out of the following five matches in all competitions. Last weekend they lost 3-0 in the FA Cup against Watford, but manager Lee Johnson rested most of his first-team regulars in that match.
Probable line-ups:
Man City: Bravo - Walker, Stones, Otamendi, Delph - De Bruyne, Fernandinho, Gundogan - Sterling, Aguero, Sane
Bristol City: Steele - Wright, Flint, Baker, Magnusson - Brownhill, Smith, Pack, Bryan - Paterson - Reid
My prediction: Manchester City to win 2-0.
