Trophy holders Manchester City continue their campaign towards a second consecutive League Cup when they visit Leicester in the quarter finals at the King Power Stadium on Tuesday. The two teams have met at the same stage of the competition last season and Manchester City prevailed on penalties after a 1-1 draw at the end of 120 minutes of play. However, the Citizens did win both Premier League meetings against the Foxes last season, 2-0 away and 5-1 at home, with Sergio Aguero scoring four goals in the home victory. Overall, Manchester City have won three of the last six direct meetings in all competitions, while Leicester won two.
Leicester are in a bit of a rough patch, they have collected just one point out of their last three Premier League matches and scored just one goal. In the previous round of the League Cup they battled past Southampton, they only managed to prevailed on penalties after a goalless draw in 120 minutes. Last weekend the Foxes lost 1-0 at Crystal Palace and dropped to 12th place in the Premier League table. The last time Leicester City won the League Cup was in the year 2000, when they defeated Tranmere Rovers in the final. Jonny Evans is suspended for this match, while Matty James, Daniel Amartey and Ben Chilwell are all injured.
Manchester City have lost their place at the top of the Premier League table after the
2-0 defeat at Chelsea on December 8, but they seem to have recovered very well from that disappointment. Last week they ended the Champions League group stage campaign with a 2-1 victory over Hoffenheim, and at the weekend they
defeated Everton 3-1 in the Premier League. In the previous League Cup matches manager Pep Guardiola fielded several youngsters and rested quite a few first-team regulars, but he might choose not to do that again at such an advanced stage of the competition. Claudio Bravo, Eliaquim Mangala, Benjamin Mendy and David Silva remain injured for the away side.
Probable line-ups:
Leicester: Schmeichel - Soyuncu, Morgan, Maguire - Pereira, Iborra, Ndidi, Fuchs - Maddison, A. Silva - Iheanacho
Man City: Muric - Walker, Stones, Kompany, Zinchenko - De Bruyne, Gundogan, Foden - Sterling, Aguero, Diaz
My prediction: Manchester City to win 3-1, the Citizens are superior and they should make that count in this match.
