Juventus veteran goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has finally chosen his future as he agreed to sign a one-year contract with French giants Paris Saint-Germain. Buffon, one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time, had contemplated retirement as he decided against extending his contract with Juventus earlier this summer, but Paris Saint-Germain persuaded him to play for another season. Moreover, the contract with PSG gives the player an option for another year if things go well. The 40-year-old goalie had won 176 caps for Italy before announcing his retirement from international football last year as his national team failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup. Buffon has played for just two clubs in his career, Parma and Juventus.
"It is with a great feeling of happiness that I join Paris St Germain," the goalkeeper said. "For the first time in my career, I am leaving my country and only a project this ambitious could have encouraged me to make such a decision." PSG club president Nasser Al- Khelaifi added: "The immensity of his career, as well as his ambitious personality, unifying and elegant, make him one of the most admired and respected players in world football. His arrival reaffirms our will to always go higher, an ambition that we intend to pursue with a determination just as strong."
It is no secret that the PSG president is hoping that one day his club would win the Champions League and Gianluigi Buffon has shared the same dream for most of his career as he never managed to win this competition with Juventus. However, the experienced goalie insists the Champions League is not "an obsession for me and neither for Paris Saint-Germain. I think I can also help PSG to grow a bit on the pitch so then we can aim for even more important goals." Buffon has won the UEFA Cup with Parma and no less than nine Serie A titles with Juventus, along with the FIFA World Cup with Italy in 2006. PSG also have a new manager for next season as former Borussia Dortmund boss Thomas Tuchel replaced Unai Emery.
Paris Saint-Germain are 13/2 at Bet365 to win the Champions League next season.
