137 people arrested
Another massive anti-online gambling bust has been conducted on April 5 in Malaysia, where the police broke a football betting ring exploiting top British matches.
On the occasion, 137 people were arrested. Most of them originated from China and Taiwan and only five of them were Malaysians.
According to the police spokesman Abdul Rashid Abdul Wahab, “They were involved in football gambling, online gambling and in computer scam activities."
He also stated that this criminal ring was rather sophisticated, and held closed-circuit televisions systems for security and advance warning of police activity in the five bungalows raided by the police, which got a tip-off about the ring's activities from an informant.
One of the persons who welcomed the police action was Aseh Che Mat, chairman of the Football Association of Malaysia's (FAM) transparency committee, who said: "I praise the swift action by Malaysian police to wipe out this syndicate. Criminal syndicates must realise they cannot sustain their activities in Malaysia for long.”
Another comment arrived from Asian Football Confederation (AFC) general secretary Alex Soosay who assessed: "Gambling has been detrimental to the development of football in Asia."
