Premier League side Arsenal have finally named the successor to Unai Emery, on Friday they announced that former midfielder Mikel Arteta is the man they have chosen to take the club forward. Emery was sacked in November after 18 months in charge, following the club's worst run without a victory since February 1992. Arteta, aged 37, has played for Arsenal between 2011 and 2016 and won the FA Cup twice with the Gunners. This is his firs job as head coach, he has been working as a coach under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City after retiring as a player.
"We need to be competing for the top trophies in the game," Mikel Arteta said. "That's been made very clear to me in my discussions with owners Stan and Josh Kroenke and the senior people from the club. We all know there is a lot of work to be done to achieve that but I am confident we'll do it. I'm realistic enough to know it won't happen overnight, but the current squad has plenty of talent and there is a great pipeline of young players coming through from the academy." Arsenal are currently 10th in the Premier League with 22 points, seven points behind fourth-placed Chelsea.
Arsenal head of football Raul Sanllehi said they inteviewed "several top-class candidates" before choosing Arteta. "Mikel understands Arsenal Football Club and what it means to our fans around the world," Sanlehi said. "We look forward to him getting down to work and bringing the best out of our squad as we work to get our season back on track. I must also pay tribute to Freddie Ljungberg for his hard work and leadership. Together with Per Mertesacker, he has done a vital job for us in difficult circumstances. Freddie and Per are important parts of the Arsenal family and care deeply for this club.” Freddie Ljungberg will remain in interim charge for the match at Everton on Saturday, and Arteta will take full charge on Sunday.
Arsenal are currently 18/1 at NetBet to finish in the Premier League top four this season.
