Valencia central defender Shkodran Mustafi has agreed a move to Arsenal, according to
Sky Sports sources, but the two clubs have not reached an agreement on the transfer fee yet. Arsene Wenger has to look for a centre-back before the transfer window closes, because Per Mertesacker will be out for months with a knee injury, while Gabriel Paulista was recently ruled out for up to two months.
Mustafi is a Germany international, valued at 30 million pounds. The negotiations between the two clubs will probably continue next week as Arsene Wenger and his men are preparing for their first Premier League match of the season, at home against Liverpool on Sunday. For that match Wenger will most likely field a makeshift pair of central defenders, as Laurent Koscielny is not yet fully fit since he only returned to training on Wednesday.
Calum Chambers and Rob Holding could play against Liverpool, but Wenger could field the more experienced duo of Natxo Monreal and Mathieu Debuchy, even though they are known for playing as full-backs. Mustafi has joined Everton as a youth player but didn't manage to make a Premier League appearance before moving to Italy at Sampdoria. In 2014 he joined Valencia, playing 61 league matches and scoring 6 goals for the club.
Arsenal are 6/1 at Bet365 to win the Premier League title this season.
