Arsenal have broken their transfer record on deadline day to sign Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The Gunners paid 56 million pounds for the 28-year-old Gabonese forward, significantly more than the previous record fee of 46 million pounds which was paid for Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette last summer. Dortmund had already agreed the transfer fee with Arsenal during the past few days but they wanted to secure a replacement before letting Aubameyang go. On transfer deadline day the Bundesliga side reached an agreement with Chelsea to loan Michy Batshuayi for the rest of the season.
"I'm really happy to be here in this great team," Aubameyang said. "The club has such a big history and great players like Thierry Henry. He's an example for us strikers. I'm a fast player and I score goals too, like Henry a little bit. I think I have to work a lot to be like him, but I will do. I hope that we will come back to the top as soon as possible. I will do my best to join in." The African striker was in some trouble at Dortmund as he got suspended by the club for one match for missing a team meeting.
However, Aubameyang is regarded as one of the best strikers in Europe at the moment, with an incredible track record. He scored scored 141 goals in 213 games for Dortmund since 2013, and this season he bagged 21 goals in 24 matches. He joined Dortmund from French club Saint-Etienne in 2013 but only managed to win the German Cup in 2017. He was named African Player of the Year in 2015, Bundesliga player of the year in 2016, and last season he was the top goal scorer in the German top flight with 31 goals.
Arsenal are 12/1 at Bet365 to finish inside the Premier League top four this season.
