Arsenal suffered their second consecutive Premier League defeat on Sunday as they got hammered 4-0 by Liverpool at Anfield Road. Manager Arsene Wenger asked the club fans to stick by his team during this difficult time, but admitted that the defeat was "absolutely disastrous". What is even more troubling than the score line for Arsenal is that they have not managed to send a single shot on target during the ninety minutes of the game, a terrible display that doesn't leave much room for hope.
"If some people feel as if I am the problem, then I am sorry that I am the problem," Wenger said after the match amid increasing supporter protests. "But we want our fans to be with us even in a losing performance like that. The only thing we can do is come back and give them a better performance." Last week Arsenal lost 1-0 at Stoke City after having kicked off the season with a spectacular 4-3 victory over Leicester City at the Emirates Stadium. Arsene Wenger signed a new two-year contract with the club at the end of last season.
Summer signing Alexandre Lacazette was left on the bench at Anfield Road while Alexis Sanchez got his first start of the season, but goals from Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Daniel Sturridge gave Liverpool a deserved win. "We were not at the right level from the first minute - physically, technically and mentally - and we were punished," Wenger added. "Today our performance was not acceptable. It is true today we were an easy opponent for Liverpool. Our performance was absolutely disastrous."
Arsenal are now 25/1 to win the Premier League title this season.
