Arsenal have suffered their fourth consecutive defeat in all competitions on Sunday, 2-1 at newly-promoted Brighton, but manager Arsene Wenger doesn't even seem to consider resignation. That was the eighth defeat for Arsenal in their last thirteen matches and the result that surely puts a top-four finish in the Premier League out of reach for them this season. This is the worst run of results in Arsene Wenger's 22 years in charge at Arsenal and it will probably be remembered as his worst season at the club.
"It's the first time it happens in my whole career, I must say," Wenger said after the match. "It's not easy, but I have enough experience and enough desire to turn things around and I must say that, at the moment, when you need to stay in the game we are making a few mistakes at the wrong moments. We have to stick together and focus. We have no other solution." About resignation, he added: "You focus on your job. These are always the questions you get when you are in the situation we are in. You do your job and you do the right thing and the things you think are right for the team and that's it."
Last season was the first time that Arsenal finished outside the Premier League top four under Wenger, and right now they are in sixth place, thirteen points behind fourth-placed Tottenham. Wenger admits that his side can no longer reach a Champions League placement this season: "Yes, I think that fourth place had already gone. Mathematically, with five teams in front of us, you need two to collapse. With such a number of games to go it's very difficult to think it will happen."
Carlo Ancelotti is 11/4 at SkyBet to replace Arsene Wenger at Arsenal, Joachim Loew is 7/2 and Brendan Rodgers is 5/1 to get the job.
