Burnley have secured the signing of Belgium midfielder Steven Defour from Anderlecht. The transfer fee was not disclosed, but Burnley have revealed it is a club-record fee. The 28-year-old midfielder has put pen to paper on a three-year contract with newly-promoted Burnley. He has 46 caps for the Belgium national team and has played at the 2014 World Cup. He was not included in the squad for Euro 2016 though.
"I hope I can bring my experience to the team and the club to stay in the Premier League," Defour said after the agreement was made public. "It's a new challenge for me, but I like that." The transfer fee is believed to be in the region of 7.5 million pounds. The Belgium international has secured two top-flight titles in Portugal while playing for FC Porto, while at home he won the title twice with Standard Liege.
Defour added: "It has been a long few weeks, but I am very happy to be here. When I knew that Burnley was interested, I took some time to look into the club and I saw some interesting stuff. I also called a friend of mine who plays at Brentford and he told me Burnley was the best team in the Championship and that it would be a really good choice for me." Defour was a great prospect a few years ago, in 2011 Sir Alex Ferguson wanted to bring him at Manchester United but he was unfortunate to break his foot before the transfer could go through.
Burnley lost 1-0 at home to Swansea last weekend and they are 11/10 at Bet365 to avoid relegation this season.
