New Sunderland boss David Moyes wanted to set the fans' expectations right after his side lost two games out of two since the start of the Premier League season. The manager said that everybody at and around the club should expect another relegation battle, after the Black Cats lost 2-1 at home to newly-promoted Middlesbrough. On the opening day of the season Sunderland came close to stealing a point at Manchester City, but a late own-goal gave the Citizens a 2-1 win.
Moyes was asked whether the club fans should prepare for a season of relegation struggle and he answered: "Well, they would probably be right. That's where they've been every other year for the last four years, so why would it suddenly change?" Against Middlesbrough they fell 2-0 behind before Patrick van Aanholt scored a consolation goal. The manager added: "I don't think you can hide the facts. People will be flat because they are hoping that something is going to dramatically change - it can't dramatically change, it can't."
During the past four campaigns Sunderland finished 17th, 14th, 16th and 17th again last season. In all those season they changed the managers during the campaign, the last time they had a boss in charge throughout a full season was in 2010-2011. Sunderland have signed five players this season - Papy Djilobodji, Steven Pienaar, Donald Love and Paddy McNair - plus the season-long loan of Manchester United winger Adnan Januzaj.
David Moyes is 20/1 at SkyBet to become the first Premier League manager to lose his job during the current season.
