Everton have completed their second signing of the summer, midfielder Andre Gomes joins the Toffees from LaLiga champions Barcelona for 22 million pounds. The 25-year-old Portuguese midfielder signed a five-year contract with Everton after having spent last season on loan at Goodison Park. In fact, manager Marco Silva was so happy with Gomes' contribution last season that he insisted the club reach a permanent agreement with Barcelona for his transfer. Gomes scored one goal in 29 appearances for Everton last season. West Ham also made a couple of offers for Gomes this summer but Barcelona rejected them.
"Last year was a really good experience for me," Gomes said. "I just wanted to feel part of something special and I found it here. It was good for me in that moment and right now, after signing for Everton, it's even better. I think the ambition from the club is not only for me, I think it's for all the players and the fans. We are all excited about that. I hope in the seasons to come we can enjoy more good football and win trophies. That's what we all want."
"Andre was a really important player for us last season and I think we were really able to help him, too," said Everton manager Marco Silva. "It was a good decision to bring Andre to the club and we made it one of our priorities to get him back. What Andre learned about the club, our fans and our vision convinced him that this is where he wants to play his football and I know he shares the big ambitions that we have going forward."
Andre Gomes had joined Barcelona from Valencia in 2016 after having helped Portugal to win the 2016 European Championship. He won one Liga title, two Copa del Reys and one Spanish Super Cup at Barcelona, but his performances never impressed the fans. In fact, in 2016-2017 he was voted "worst signing of the season" by the fans and at some point he even got booed at Camp Nou. Things changed at Everton, he became one of the fans' favourite player at Goodison Park during his loan spell.
Andre Gomes is the second signing of the summer for Everton after they secured Huddersfield Town goalkeeper Jonas Lossl on a free transfer. Everton finished last season in eighth place, now they are 7/2 at Bet365 to achieve a top-six finish in the Premier League this season.
