Premier League top four contenders Tottenham have not lost much time after the sacking of manager Mauricio Pochettino, the former boss was sacked on Tuesday and on Wednesday morning the club announced the name of his successor: Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho. The 56-year-old Portuguese boss had been out of work since December 2018, when he was sacked by Manchester United. Mourinho has won the Premier League title three times with Chelsea and has now signed a contract with Tottenham until the end of the 2022-23 season.
"The quality in both the squad and the academy excites me," said Mourinho. "Working with these players is what has attracted me." Spurs chairman Daniel Levy said: "In Jose we have one of the most successful managers in football. He has won honours at every club he has coached. We believe he will bring energy and belief to the dressing room." Former boss Mauricio Pochettino had been in charge at Tottenham since May 2014, and although he established the club in the Premier League top four he failed to win trophies. Last season the Spurs reached the final of the UEFA Champions League but lost to Liverpool.
The Spurs had a terrible start to the season this year, they have lost four of their twelve Premier League matches so far and are sitting in an unfamiliar 14th place at the moment. Tottenham are 11 points away from fourth-placed Chelsea, so it will be quite a challenge for Jose Mourinho to lead them to a top-four finish this season. The Portuguese manager was most successful in England at Chelsea, but he also managed to win the UEFA Europa League and the League Cup at Manchester United. He made a name for himself in 2004, when he won the UEFA Champions League with FC Porto, and then went on to win titles both in Italy and Spain with Inter Milan and Real Madrid.
Tottenham are currently 11/4 at William Hill to finish inside the Premier League top four this season.
