Liverpool have the chance to move up to second place in the Premier League table at least for a couple of days if they defeat Newcastle United at Anfield Road on Saturday. The reverse fixture was not easy for the Reds, the Magpies held them to a 1-1 draw at St James' Park as Joselu scored the equalizer after Philippe Coutinho had opened the scoring for the visitors. Liverpool have not won any of the last three direct matches against Newcastle, but the Magpies have not won at Anfield Road since 1995.
Liverpool are enjoying a good moment, they have won their last three matches in all competitions and can leapfrog Manchester United into second place if they beat Newcastle as the Red Devils play at Crystal Palace on Monday. Last week the Reds eased past West Ham United, they won the match 4-1 with goals from Emre Can, Salah, Firmino and Mane. Nathaniel Clyne has returned to action with the Under-23 team but most likely he is not yet ready for first-team action, while Jordan Henderson is getting closer to his return as well.
Newcastle are fighting bravely to remain in the Premier League and lately they have been quite successful, even though they are still just two points above the relegation zone. The Magpies have lost just one of their last eight Premier League matches, and that was against leaders Manchester City. They are unbeaten in their last four matches, and that run includes a 1-0 home victory over second-placed Manchester United. Last week Newcastle secured a 2-2 draw at Bournemouth but they had a 2-0 lead at half-time. Jesus Gamez, Islam Slimani and Jonjo Shelvey are expected to miss out through injury.
Probable line-ups:
Liverpool: Karius - Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson - Chamberlain, Henderson, Wijnaldum - Salah, Firmino, Mane
Newcastle: Dubravka - Yedlin, Lejeune, Lascelles, Clark, Dummett - Murphy, Hayden, Diame, Kenedy - Joselu
My prediction: Liverpool to win 3-1.
Here are the odds for the match at Bet365:
