Premier League: Liverpool want to extend Jurgen Klopp's contract

Liverpool are still celebrating their triumph in the UEFA Champions League, they defeated Tottenham 2-0 in Madrid on Saturday evening to claim their twelfth European title, but the club owners are already thinking about the future. And since the team's results have been so good under German manager Jurgen Klopp, the Liverpool ownership are keen on extending the manager's contract as soon as possible. Jurgen Klopp is still under contract with the Reds until 2022 and the 51-year-old led Liverpool to a second-place finish in the Premier League this season.

"Jurgen is a brilliant coach but just as importantly he is a humble and caring man," said Liverpool chairman Tom Werner. "When the players threw Jurgen in the air after our victory, they were acknowledging what all Liverpool fans know - he is beloved by all who appreciate football." Klopp joined Liverpool in 2015 after seven seasons at Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund. The Reds finished eighth in the Premier League during his first season in charge, then finished fourth in the following two seasons, and this season they got very close to the title as they finished just one point behind champions Manchester City.

"Getting 97 points in the Premier League and winning the Champions League is an unbelievable long way to go and we did it," Klopp said after the Champions League final. "That's incredible. Now we've won something, we will carry on. We will win things. That is big. I am really happy."

The Champions League trophy is the first major success for Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool and the manager and his team were welcomed back home by around 750,000 ecstatic fans. "I don't know exactly how many people live in Liverpool but it does not look like there is a lot of space for fans of other clubs," Klopp said. "It is incredible. If you are a young kid, which do you support? There are not a lot of opportunities or options other than Liverpool. You see in the eyes how much it means. It is really intense."

Liverpool have not won the Premier League title since 1990 and they are currently 11/4 at Bet365 to win the Premier League title next season.
