Defending Premier League champions Manchester City have made their first major move on the transfer market this summer as they have paid the release fee of Atletico Madrid midfielder Rodri. The fee is worth 62.8 million pounds and it was paid by the Citizens on Wednesday, with Rodri expected to join the Premier League champions by the end of the week. The 23-year-old Spanish midfielder was under contract with Atletico until June 2023.
The transfer fee of 62.8 million pounds means that Rodri will become the most expensive player in the Manchester City squad, surpassing the 60 million pounds that they paid to Leicester City for the signing of Riyad Mahrez in 2018. Manchester City needed a defensive midfielder like Rodri in order to challenge Fernandinho's spot in the first eleven, his arrival definitely gives manager Pep Guardiola a lot more options to play with in midfield.
Rodri has spent just one season at Atletico Madrid, he joined from Villarreal last summer for 25 million euros and scored 3 goals in 34 league appearances for the LaLiga side. Rodri also has six caps for the Spanish senior national team. Manchester City have also signed left-back Angelino from PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday, the 22-year-old is expected to be a competitor for Olexandr Zinchenko and Benjamin Mendy for a place in the first eleven. Angelino had been a Manchester City player between 2014 and 2018, he was then sold to PSV but the Citizens had a buy-back clause that they decided to trigger after the young Spaniard had a great season in the Netherlands.
Manchester City are currently 4/6 at Bet365 to win the Premier League title again next season.
