Premier League: Manchester United sign Harry Maguire

Premier League: Manchester United sign Harry Maguire

Manchester United have broken a world record, they paid 80 million pounds to Leicester for the transfer of Harry Maguire, making him the most expensive defender in the history of football. The 26-year-old England international signed a six-year contract with the Red Devils, with the option of an automatic one-year extension. Before this transfer, Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk was the most expensive defender in the world after the Reds paid 75 million pounds for him to Southampton in 2018.

"When Manchester United come knocking on your door, it is an incredible opportunity," said Harry Maguire. The central defender is now the second most expensive signing in Premier League history after Paul Pogba, who cost Manchester United 89 million pounds. Maguire also becomes the second most expesive British player after Gareth Bale, who was sold by Tottenham to Real Madrid for a fee of 85 million pounds in 2013. In July, Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers said that the Foxes were looking for a record fee for Harry Maguire

Maguire is the third signing of the summer for Man United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, after the arrivals of right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace for 50 million pounds and winger Daniel James from Swansea for 15 million pouds. Maguire added about his new club: "From my conversations with the manager, I am excited about the vision and plans he has for the team. It's clear to see that Ole is building a team to win trophies. I am now looking forward to meeting my new team-mates and getting the season started."

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said: "Harry is one of the best centre-backs in the game today. He is a great reader of the game and has a strong presence on the pitch, with the ability to remain calm under pressure. He will fit well into this group both on and off the pitch." Harry Maguire was elected Leicester City player of the season in 2017-2018 and he has 20 caps and 1 goal for the England senior national team.

Manchester United are now 33/1 at William Hill to win the Premier League title next season.
