Premier League club Everton have finally decided to sack manager Marco Silva on Thursday, following their 5-2 defeat against local rivals Liverpool on Wednesday evening. That was the ninth defeat of the season for the Toffees, who are down in 18th place in the Premier League table after having lost their last three matches. Marco Silva had taken charge 18 months ago and led the Toffees to an eighth-placed finish last season. Overall, he led Everton in 60 matches, winning 24 and losing 24.
Former striker Duncan Ferguson has been put in temporary charge and will have to handle a difficultg match on Saturday as Everton will have to face Chelsea. The club said they are looking to appoint a new permanent manager as soon as possible, with Shanghai SIPG's Vitor Pereira emerging from media rumours as an early favourite. The next boss will be Everton's fourth manager after the sacking of Roberto Martinez in May 2016. Martinez went on to become quite successful as manager of the Belgium national team, while Everton finished 7th in 2017 and then eighth in the last two seasons.
Marco Silva, aged 42, managed Hull City and Watford before succeeding Sam Allardyce at Goodison Park. His appointment was viewed by the Everton board as a way towards playing more attractive football, and the club spent around 90 million pounds on new players ahead of the 2018-2019 season. The Toffeees finished eighth, and then spent another 100 million pounds on new faces this summer. Things didn't work out at all this time, they have won just four league games this season and it seemed like there was no hope for improvement under the current management.
David Moyes is 11/8 at William Hill to become the next Everton manager, Vitor Pereira is 6/5 while Eddie Howe and Marcelo Gallardo are both 10/1 to get the job.
