Newly-promoted Newcastle host struggling title contenders Liverpool at St James' Park on Sunday afternoon. In the 2015-2016 season, when Newcastle got relegated to the Championship, they managed to avoid defeat in both Premier League matches against Liverpool, they got a 2-2 draw at Anfield Road and a 2-0 victory at home. In fact, Liverpool have not beaten Newcastle at St James' Park since 2013, when they secured a spectacular 6-0 victory with two goals from Daniel Sturridge and another pair from Jordan Henderson.
Things are going pretty well for Newcastle so far, they have won three matches and lost the other three and they are sitting in the middle of the Premier League table. They even had a run of three consecutive Premier League wins, but that came to an end last weekend when they got beaten 1-0 at Brighton. Paul Dummett and Massadio Haidara remain injured, but Florian Lejeune might recover in time to have a place in the match squad. Aleksandar Mitrovic is available again after having served a three-match ban but he might not get into the starting eleven.
Liverpool ended a poor run of four matches without a victory in all competitions last weekend when they secured a 3-2 victory at Leicester City, but they got back to not winning in midweek as they got held to a 1-1 draw at Spartak Moscow in the Champions League. Jurgen Klopp's defense is among the worst in the league, they have conceded 11 goals in six matches and just two teams have let in more. Adam Lallana, Adam Bodgan and Nathaniel Clyne remain injured.
Probable line-ups:
Newcastle: Elliot - Yedlin, Lascelles, Clark, Mbemba - Hayden, Merino - Ritchie, Perez, Atsu - Joselu
Liverpool: Mignolet - Gomez, Matip, Klavan, Robertson - Can, Henderson, Coutinho - Salah, Sturridge, Mane
My prediction: Liverpool to win 3-1.
Here are the odds for the match at Bet365:
Newcastle win - 5.25
Draw - 4.10
Liverpool win - 1.70
