Sunderland have broken their club transfer record by signing Lorient midfielder Didier Ndong for a fee of 13.6 million pounds. The player signed a five-year contract with the Black Cats. Ndong is just 22 years old and he is a Gabon international. The previous transfer record for Sunderland was the signing of Asamoah Gyan for 13 million pounds six years ago. The Black Cats have not won any of their first three Premier League matches of the season, they recorded a draw and two losses.
Ndong said: "I am very proud and happy to sign for Sunderland. This is a new adventure for me and to play in the Premier League is a dream come true. Maybe the Sunderland fans don't know me yet, but I promise that they will quickly discover that I will give everything for them and the club. It will be an honour to wear the Sunderland shirt and I will wear it with a true understanding of what it means." Manager David Moyes insisted that he needed to reinforce his squad in order to survive the relegation battle.
Before transfer deadline day Sunderland had signed just four players on permanent deals: Papy Djilobodji from Chelsea, Donald Love and Paddy McNair from Manchester United and Steven Pienaar on a free transfer. Ndong moved to Lorient in France from Tunisian club CS Sfaxien in 2015. He became one of the essential players at the Ligue 1 club, making 46 league appearances and scoring two goals. He made his debut for the Gabon national team in 2012 and earned 18 caps since then.
