Tottenham have completed the signing of Paris Saint-Germain right-back Serge Aurier on transfer deadline day for a fee which is reported to be around 23 million pounds. The 24-year-old Ivorian full-back signed a five-year contract with the Spurs. The deal has been waiting to go through for some time due to work permit complications because Aurier was handed a two-month suspended jail sentence in France last year after having assaulted a police officer. He denied the charge and claimed he was the victim of police brutality.
"This is a fresh start for me. I am determined to prove myself as a professional both on and off the pitch," said Aurier. "The fans are the most important people at any club and I am looking forward to showing them and everyone at Spurs the real Serge Aurier." Tottenham were looking for a right-back to replace Kyle Walker, who was sold to Manchester City for 50 million pounds earlier this summer. He is the fourth signing of the summer for Tottenham, who have brought in central defenders Juan Foyth and Davinson Sanchez and backup goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga.
Aurier has won two Ligue 1 titles and two French cups with Paris Saint-Germain and has also won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2015 with the national team of Ivory Coast. He did have quite a bit of trouble off the pitch though. At a certain point he was =was banned for three European matches after insulting referee Bjorn Kuipers on Facebook and last year he was suspended indefinitely by PSG after having insulted head coach Laurent Blanc and calling team-mate Angel di Maria a "clown" on social media.
Tottenham are 14/1 at Bet365 to win the Premier League title this season.
