Third-placed Tottenham are looking to return to winning ways when they face relegation candidates Brighton at the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London on Tuesday. The reverse fixture, played in September, was won 2-1 by the Spurs with goals from Harry Kane and Erik Lamela, while Anthony Knockaert scored a consolation goal for the Seagulls. Last season Brighton managed to hold the Spurs to a 1-1 draw in the home match after having lost 2-0 in London. Overall, Tottenham have won four of the last five direct matches in all competitions. The last time Brighton won a match against Tottenham was in 1983.
Tottenham suffered a 1-0 defeat at defending champions Manchester City last weekend, but the result didn't affect their position in the league table because all teams between fourth and sixth place lost as well. The Spurs remain third in the Premier League table, one point above Arsenal and Chelsea and two points ahead of sixth-placed Manchester United. Tottenham also have to prepare for the Champions League semi-final, so manager Mauricio Pochettino might choose to rest players that are carrying some slight knocks like goalkeeper Hugo Lloris and midfielder Dele Alli. Serge Aurier, Harry Kane and Harry Winks are still out injured, while Moussa Sissoko and Erik Lamela are injury doubts.
Brighton are still dangerously close to the relegation zone, they are just three points above 18th-placed Cardiff, but the Seagulls have the advantage of a game in hand. However, since Tuesday's match at Tottenham is their game in hand, it's quite obvious that it might not be such an advantage after all since the odds are firmly stacked against the visitors in this match. Last weekend Brighton did very well to grab a goalless draw at Wolves, that point could end up making a huge difference at the end of the season. However, that was their sixth consecutive match without scoring, they have not scored a goal in the Premier League since the beginning of March. Anthony Knockaert is still suspended for the visitors, while Davy Propper is out injured.
Probable line-ups:
Tottenham: Gazzaniga - Trippier, Sanchez, Vertonghen, Rose - Dier, Wanyama, Skipp - Eriksen - Llorente, Son
Brighton: Ryan - Montoya, Duffy, Dunk, Bernardo - March, Kayal, Stephens, Locadia - Gross - Murray
My prediction: Tottenham to win 2-0, Brighton will probably try to defend but the Spurs should be able to find a way past them.
Here are the odds for the match at Bet365:
