Everton have completed one of their most prestigious transfers in recent years as Wayne Rooney rejoins his boyhood club on a two-year contract. The former Manchester United forward joined the Toffees on a free transfer as the Red Devils agreed to release him as part of the deal that will see Everton striker Romelu Lukaku move to Old Trafford. Wayne Rooney left Everton 13 years ago to join Manchester United and went on to score 253 goals in 559 appearances for the club.
The 31-year-old forward has won five Premier League titles plus the Champions League, Europa League and FA Cup after moving from Everton to Manchester United for 27 million pounds. Rooney admitted that his first game back in the Everton shirt "will be an emotional day". "It's a great feeling to be back. I cannot wait to meet the lads, get on the training pitch and then get on the pitch to play," the player added. Wayne Rooney was feeling left out at Old Trafford under Jose Mourinho as he only appeared in 25 league games last season.
"I'm not just coming back because it's the team I support, the team I grew up playing for - I'm coming back because I feel the club can move forward and be successful," said Rooney. "I want to be part of it. There will be pressure on me to perform, but I'm ready to go. I believe I can help move this club forward and be more successful on the pitch." Rooney scored 17 goals in 77 games during his first years at Everton. Toffees manager Ronald Koeman added: said: "Wayne has shown me that ambition that we need and that winning mentality - he knows how to win titles and I'm really happy he's decided to come home.He is still only 31 and I don't have any doubts about his qualities. It's fantastic he's here."
Everton are now 11/4 at Bet365 to finish inside the Premier League top six next season.
