Former Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard has announced his retirement from football at the end of a 19-year career as a player. He has made no less than 710 appearances for Liverpool, his boyhood club, and won nine trophies with the Reds. He joined Major League Soccer outfit Los Angeles Galaxy in 2015. He is also the fourth most capped player in the history of the England national team, with 114 appearances and six major tournaments with the Three Lions.
"I feel lucky to have experienced so many wonderful highlights over the course of my career," Gerrard said. "I have had an incredible career and am thankful for each and every moment of my time at Liverpool, England and LA Galaxy. I fulfilled my childhood dream by pulling on the famous red shirt of Liverpool." Gerrard has been linked to the manager job at League One side MK Dons, but revealed the offer came "too soon". The former England captain is currently studying for the UEFA A coaching license, which is the final step before the Pro license that would allow him to manage a top-flight club.
About his future in the game, Gerrard said: "I am excited about the future and feel I still have a lot to offer the game, in whatever capacity that may be." Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp urged Gerrard's fans and the media to be patient, adding that he would welcome the former captain in his staff at Anfield Road. "The first thing you should all learn is that, if someone wants to help Steven Gerrard, stop being so excited about each step he is doing next," Klopp said. "The door is always open for him. From our side, if he wants to make a different career to his former career then we want to help him. There is nothing else to say - but maybe that is already too much."
