Tennis: Ana Ivanovic retires at the age of 29

Ana Ivanovic, a former WTA world number one and winner of the French Open in Roland Garros in 2008 has decided to quit professional tennis at the age of 29. The Serbian player has been sidelined due to an injury since August and dropped to 63rd position in the world rankings as a result. She only managed to win 15 matches throughout 2016 and her last professional victory was in June. "I can only play if it is up to my own high standards. I can no longer do that so it is time to move on," Ivanovic said when announcing her retirement. She was the world number one for three months in 2008 and has won 15 singles titles during her career. Her only Grand Slam title was at Roland Garros, but she also managed to play three other major finals, at the French Open, at Wimbledon and at the Australian open. "It has been a difficult decision but I have so much to celebrate," she added. "I began dreaming about playing tennis when I was five and saw Monica Seles playing on TV. I have seen heights I never dreamt of achieving." Ana Ivanovic is the wife of Manchester United German midfielder Basian Schweinsteiger. After ending her playing career she revealed that she would like to consider a career in business along with her work with UNICEF.
