New world number one Andy Murray had a fairly lucky draw at the ATP World Tour Finals, he ended up in Group John McEnroe alongside Stan Wawrinka, Kei Nishikori and Marin Cilic. Former world number one Novak Djokovic will play in Group Ivan Lendl with Milos Raonic, Gael Monfils and Dominic Thiem. Andy Murray became the new world number one on Monday, after having clinched the Paris Masters 1000 title at the end of a 19-match winning streak. If the Briton wins the ATP World Tour Finals, he will be certain of ending 2016 as the number one player in the world rankings.
Novak Djokovic will play in the first match of the tournament on Sunday against 23-year-old Austrian player Dominic Thiem, while Murray will take on Marin Cilic on Monday. Murray has lost recently against all the three opponents in his group. Wawrinka won three of the last four matches against the Briton, Nishikori beat him at the US Open this year, while Cilic defeated him in the final of the Cincinnati tournament earlier this year. On the other hand, Djokovic has never been beaten by any of the three opponents in his group.
"Once you're out on the court, you don't think about your ranking," Murray said after the draw and the official confirmation of his number one status. "You're playing against the top eight players in the world. I look forward to getting out there and playing at the O2. I'll try and take a few days rest now, start hitting again on Thursday. I need a few days' break. It will be one big push for all the guys. Everyone has played a lot of tennis and hopefully everyone can play well."
Andy Murray is 5/4 at Bet365 to win the World Tour Finals next week, while Novak Djokovic is 11/8 to win the tournament.
