Tennis: Novak Djokovic defeated by world number 109

Former world number one Novak Djokovic continues to struggle as he was defeated in the second round at Indian Wells by world number 109 Taro Daniel. Djokovic lost the match 7-6 (7-3) 4-6 6-1, on his first appearance since losing to unseeded Chung Hyeon in the last 16 at the Australian Open in January. In February Djokovic had surgery once again to sort out his elbow injury but the 30-year-old will most likely need more time to get back into shape. However, there's no guarantee that the elbow issue won't act up again in the future. "It felt like first match I ever played on the tour. Very weird. I completely lost rhythm," Djokovic said after the match. "I was grateful to be out on the court after surgery that quickly but at the same time I just didn't feel good at all. I was not even supposed to be here because of the surgery that was only five, six weeks ago. But I recovered very quickly, and I got myself ready." This defeat marks the fifth time in the past ten years that Djokovic lost to a player ranked outside the world top 100. Novak Djokovic had 61 unforced errors during the match against Taro Daniel, and the underdog admits he was lucky to pull through. "He obviously wasn't in his top form," Daniel said. "So I was able to take advantage of it. And even if I lost the second set, I still had faith I could pull something off in the third. I was able to stay pretty tough, so I'm pretty proud of that. I played the best set of the whole match and that was really good." Meanwhile, current world number one Roger Federer advanced to the third round with a 6-3 7-6 (8-6) victory over Argentina's Federico Delbonis.
