Former world number one Serena Williams now has a big chance of winning her first Grand Slam title since giving birth after she defeated Anastasija Sevastova in the US Open semi-final. Williams also played the Wimbledon final earlier this season, but lost against Angelique Kerber. The semi-final match only lasted for 66 minutes as Serena Williams dominated Sevastova and won 6-3, 6-0. Serena Williams, aged 36, can now equal Margaret Court's record of 24 Grand Slam singles titles if she wins the final on Saturday.
"It is really incredible, a year ago I was literally fighting for my life at the hospital after having the baby," Williams said after the match. She missed last year's US Open because of the birth of her child Olympia. "Every day I step out on this court I am so grateful to have an opportunity to play this sport," Williams added. "So no matter what happens in any match, I already feel like I have already won." About her form, Williams added: "This is just the beginning. I'm only a few months in and really looking forward to the rest of the year and next year. I just feel like there's a lot of growth still to go in my game, that's actually the most exciting part. Even though I'm not a spring chicken, I still have a very, very bright future."
Serena Williams will play Japan's Naomi Osaka in Saturday's final, the Asian played defeated Madison Keys in the semi-finals to reach her first ever Grand Slam final. After the victory, Osaka revealed what she was thinking about during the match: "This is going to sound really bad… but I was just thinking - I really wanted to play Serena. Because she's Serena." Serena Williams has faced Naomi Osaka just once before and it was the Japanese player who won 6-3 6-2 at the Miami Open earlier this year.
Serena Williams is 4/11 at Bet365 to win Saturday's final, while Naomi Osaka is 11/5 to win it.
