The first Grand Slam tournament of the season will have probably the best finals the tennis fans could have hoped for as world number one Simona Halep will take on world number two Caroline Wozniacki. Moreover, the winner of the match will also get the world number one spot next Monday as the difference between the two players in the WTA rankings is just 330 points. Also, the winner of the match will celebrate her first Grand Slam title as neither Halep nor Wozniacki have managed to win a major title before.
Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki defeated unseeded Belgian Elise Mertens in the semi-finals, she won 6-3 7-6 (7-2). "I think it's been a great two weeks so far," said Wozniacki. "I'm really happy and proud of how I've managed to turn things around when things weren't going my way and keep it up whenever it was going my way. I'm just excited. It's another final." 27-year-old Wozniacki has reached the US Open final on two occasions, in 2009 and 2014, but lost to Kim Clijsters and Serena Williams.
Simona Halep had a longer and tougher match in the semi-finals, she rescued two match point before defeating Germany's Angelique Kerber 6-3 4-6 9-7. The Romanian world number one has played the French Open final twice, in 2014 and 2017, but lost to Maria Sharapova first and then to Jelena Ostapenko last year. "I tried to be very calm but I was a rollercoaster today - up and down," Halep said after the semi-final. "I didn't give up and that's what matters. If you don't give up you can win. I'm really proud of myself actually."
