Team Astana's Italian rider Fabio Aru has won the fifth stage of the Tour de France on Wednesday, the first summit finish of this year's race. The 27-year-old Italian attacked with 2.3 kilometers left in the stage on the climb to Planche des Belles Filles, while Team Sky were dictating the tempo with Michel Nieve at the front of the pack. Nobody in the main group tried to follow Aru, who built a solid lead and eventually won the stage with an advantage of 16 seconds on second-placed Daniel Martin and 20 seconds on third-placed Christopher Froome.
This was the first ever victory at the Tour de France for Fabio Aru, who has previously won the Tour of Spain in 2015 and finished second at the Giro d'Italia in the same year. Geraint Thomas, the leader of the general classification at the start of the stage, was dropped by the favourites group on the final climb and lost 40 seconds to Aru. Team Sky's Chris Froome gained 20 seconds on Thomas and took the overall lead. Geraint Thomas is now second in the overall classification, 12 seconds behind Froome, while Aru is a further 2 seconds back in third place.
"It's an amazing feeling to be back in yellow but the race is far from over, it's just beginning for me," Froome said at the end of the stage. "As a team we're in a great position with first and second and that gives us great confidence and options going forward. Today went really well, although if anything, I made a bit of a mistake in letting Aru go clear. He showed in the Dauphine he was in great form and today confirmed that." The Briton is chasing his third consecutive Tour title, and fourth in five years.
