The Allianz Arena in Munich will witness a fierce football battle on Wednesday evening, when Bundesliga champions Bayern host Premier League title contenders Liverpool in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League last-sixteen tie. The first leg ended in a goalless draw and that leaves qualification pretty much up for grabs, even though Bayern have the slight advantage of playing the second leg at home. The two teams have not met in an European competition since 2001, when Liverpool won 3-2 to claim the UEFA Super Cup in Monte Carlo. The overall record of the direct meetings between these two sides is perfectly balanced at the moment, with one victory apiece and four draws.
Bayern Munich have gone through a revival lately, they have not lost any of their last seven matches in all competitions and went on to win three out of three games in the Bundesliga after the goalless draw at Anfield. That good streak allowed them to move at the top of the league table, even though they are tied on 57 points with Borussia Dortmund. Last week the Bavarians knocked six past Wolfsburg and the week before they hammered Borussia Monchengladbach 5-1. Thomas Muller and Joshua Kimmich are suspended for this match, while Corentin Tolisso and Kingsley Coman are injured. David Alaba and Arjen Robben are both injury doubts.
Liverpool have been having trouble with scoring goals lately, they recorded three goalless draws in the last five matches in all competitions. That cost them their place at the top of the Premier League table, which is now held by Manchester United, and it might cost them the place in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals if they don't manage top score in Munich. Last weekend they did record a 4-2 Premier League victory over Burnley, a result which keeps them just one point behind the Citizens in the league table. Joe Gomez and Dejan Lovren are still out injured, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is still lacking match fitness.
Probable line-ups:
Bayern: Neuer - Rafinha, Sule, Hummels, Alaba - Alcantara, Martinez - Gnabry, Rodriguez, Ribery - Lewandowski
Liverpool: Alisson - Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson - Wijnaldum, Fabinho, Henderson - Salah, Firmino, Mane
My prediction: 1-1 draw, it will be a tight and harsh match but Liverpool should be able to pull through.
