UEFA Super Cup: Liverpool vs Chelsea preview

UEFA Super Cup: Liverpool vs Chelsea preview

Reigning European champions Liverpool kick off their continental campaign with a special match on Wednesday, they take on UEFA Europa League winners Chelsea at Vodafone Park in Istanbul on Wednesday with the UEFA Super Cup up for grabs. Liverpool have already won this trophy three times, in 1977, 2001 and 2005, while have won it just once, in 1998. Last season Liverpool defeated Chelsea 2-0 at Anfield in the Premier League, while the reverse fixture ended 1-1 in London.

Liverpool missed out on their first trophy of the season as they lost the FA Community Shield to Manchester City after a penalty shoot-out, now they have the chance to make up for that lost silverware. Last weekend they started their Premier League campaign with a comprehensive 4-1 beating of newly-promoted Norwich, but they suffered a significant blow as first-choice goalkeeper Alisson picked up an injury and will be out for several weeks. Nathaniel Clyne is also sidelined for a significant period, but there are no other injury worries for manager Jurgen Klopp. Sadio Mane was on the bench at the weekend but he could be given a starting berth in midweek, although Divock Origi did very well as his replacement.

Chelsea had a much worse start to their Premier League season, they lost 4-0 at Manchester United on Sunday and new manager Frank Lampard has already received criticism from former boss Jose Mourinho. The UEFA Super Cup is a good chance for the Blues to bounce back, but they are still dealing with some injuries and fitness issues. Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Callum Hudson-Odoi are still sidelined, while Antonio Rudiger and Willian are also expected to miss out. However, N'Golo Kante and Christian Pulisic could be given starting places after having appeared as substitutes at the weekend.

Probable line-ups:

Liverpool: Adrian - Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson - Milner, Fabinho, Henderson - Salah, Firmino, Mane

Chelsea: Arrizabalaga - Azpilicueta, Zouma, Christensen, Alonso - Kante, Jorginho - Pedro, Barkley, Pulisic - Giroud

My prediction:

Liverpool seem much stronger at the moment, Frank Lampard still has a lot to do at Chelsea, so I believe the Reds will grab a 3-1 victory.
