The latest reports regarding online gambling company Webis Holdings indicate that it has drawn the attention of top UK investment guru Jim Mellon, due to its alleged preparation to apply for an online gaming license for California, which would allow betting on horse and greyhound racing under the Webis Watch and Wager brand.
In November 2012, Webis inked a five-year lease to operate harness racing at the Cal Expo racecourse in Sacramento, California, as part of fulfilling the conditions for getting an online gaming license in the state, and it also announced back in February this year that it had set aside GBP 800,000 for “license acquisitions”.
Knowing all this and upon analyzing the situation, Mellon said: “This is my favourite speculative play at the moment.” He also noted that he had installed his math and diplomacy-skilled father on the board of directors of the GBP 20 million market capitalization company.
